September 24, 2004. Inside horse, Worth Springs, will be one of a number of horses in a scramble to grab the rail and control the early pace in today's closing heat. The 6 year old gelding was shipped over from Philadelphia in the spring and has picked up a few sprint victories but, with only average speed for this class, will be extremely vulnerable late. More likely to be hanging around late, but still not a top choice for the win, is gelded 4 year old, Sweet Anden, who has garnered all four of his career wins over this strip. Trained by Alan Seewald, the Lost Code progeny moves up from state-bred to open company. Brookes Trick takes a big drop in price after tiring late against $22k claimers a month ago. His win earlier in August at 15-1 was a popular selection on this page and there's no reason to dismiss him based on the result in his last. Bottom line on the Clever Trick gelding: he can win big at this claiming level. Regular rider Dale Beckner retains the mount. There is a horse we feel can beat that one. Our Niner drops in from another allowance try after winning 3 of 5 claiming races here this summer. Owner/trainer Edwin Broome has been a master this season at placing his horses in just the right spots. It won't be long before this well-bred 4 year old gelding (Forty Niner - Endearingly, Lyphard) starts moving up the allowance ladder, but, for now his connections will have to settle for another paycheque in the claiming ranks, and hope they don't lose him. The venerable Majestic Irish, a 9 year old with 83 career starts under his saddle, starts today from the outside post. His Monmouth debut 2 weeks ago wasn't a creditable representation of his ability. While he may be slightly below this group on a dry track, if the surface comes up muddy or sloppy his stock seriously rises. The only sophomore in the field, Dos de Mayo, appears to be way off his winning form. After 18 months on the bench, Fox Drive doesn't appear to be even a shadow of his former self. A win here would be a shock. Royal Messenger, a gelded 5 year old son of Salt Lake, is sneaky-good, with a strong late kick that makes him valuable in the gimmicks. Usually, he brings a fair price. Jelly Roll Romp appears to be over the hill at 7 years old. A return to his form of a year and a half ago at Aqueduct is unlikely. SELECTIONS #8. Our Niner PLACE 3.80 2.40 #7. Brookes Trick SHOW 2.60 #3. Royal Messenger WIN 11.60 4.60 2.60 #5. Sweet Anden TRIFECTA 140.40 SUPERFECTA 251.40 Royal Messenger (9-2) snuck up on a quick pace, set by Sweet Anden (5-1), and used that late burst of speed to angle out at the top of the stretch and hold off Our Niner (2-1) for the win in 1:11.78. Brookes Trick had the lead late but was used up chasing the pace and had to settle for the show prize. Our top three choices fulfilled the trifecta, paying out $140.40 and, using all our choices you could cash a $502.80 superfecta on a $2 ticket. The exacta paid an even $50. Congratulations! September 23, 2004. Most of this field of 7 sophomores are dropping down to the claiming division from allowance or stakes races. The one exception is Texan bred Seneca Summer, who picked up a win at this level at Saratoga and could find himself on the lead in a potentially paceless race. The added distance will likely prevent this sprinter from hitting the board for the third straight race in New York. Another reluctant pacesetter will be inside horse, Bob Baffert trainee Bornwith, who's had a few strong performances racing off the pace. New jockey, Edgar Prado, will be challenged to rate the gelded son of Charismatic in the early going. Outside horse, Bandit Nailhead, finally broke his maiden in his 13th start this here this summer, staying on the front end over 9 furlongs. Jose Santos picks up the mount on a colt who has, at least, shown stamina over his career. Polish Numbers colt, Sum Marval, trained by Todd Pletcher, makes his second start off the bench after a dismal showing at 6 furlongs at Saratoga. He was beating New York breds over the spring and summer, excelling at 7 panels. The extra furlong shouldn't be a problem and Pletcher goes back to top Belmont rider, John Velasquez. We like this one as the value play of the day. While Irish Laddie has come up with the odd big performance in stakes competition (a third in the Federico Tesio $100k stakes) and against allowance foes, he is better suited to this condition. A repeat of his win at Saratoga over a few of these in the slop would put him on the board. Owner/trainer Scott Schwartz tried to push Pat Attention into the New York state-bred stakes echelon this past summer and now has a horse desperately off the form that helped him finish a close second to West Virginia in the NY Stallion stakes in April. Fire Hero ran a strong mile here in July, then produced two fine performances over "off" tracks at Saratoga. Owning a big closing kick, a race run to his current form would make him a serious threat to the leader in the deep stretch. SELECTIONS #3. Sum Marval #4. Fire Hero PLACE 3.30 2.40 #2. Irish Laddie Edgar Prado, in contention early for a Belmont riding title, didn't have to worry about rating Bornwithit (5-1), as they were allowed to get the first quarter mile in a leisurely 24.23 on the way to a gate to wire victory, getting under the wire in 1:36.34, just holding off a strong late charge from the bettors' choice, Fire Hero (9-5). It was another 3 1/2 lengths back to Seneca Summer (5-2) who ran evenly and never seriously threatened. The exacta paid $35.60 and the trifecta returned $78.50. September 22, 2004. A competitive field of seven juveniles has been assembled for this sprint, the feature on the last Wednesday card of the meet. Who's the Cowboy began his career with two impressive front-running performances here facing New Jersey breds, but has struggled against open company and couldn't catch a dull pace in his last 12 days ago. Jockey Edwin King Jr has jumped to another longshot and will be replaced by Joe Rocco. One of the likely favorites, Bizzy Trick ships in from his maiden win at Saratoga at 9-1 odds with a $50k price tag. Stewart Elliot will be the new rider for this Joe Aquilino trainee who's been out of action for 6 weeks. A recent maiden winner we prefer is well-bred, Fierro's Choice, conditioned by Alan Goldberg, who's small stable has been very successful this summer. The son of Gilded Time overcame a tough start and wound his way through a large field in his last and has the tactical speed to be there in the stretch. After going 6-wide for the victory in his debut, Monster Chaser had the misfortune of drawing into an entry level allowance field featuring Afleet Alex, possibly the fastest juvenile in the country. The Maryland bred gelding from Meadow Monster draws Joe Bravo for the mount and has the most well established late move in the field. We Love Rocky certainly has the pedigree to win today (Devil His Due - Dancinginthestreet, Cahill Road), but the jump from maiden claiming races to this might be a bit much and he does like the lead, but lacks the speed to really get clear. A couple of very quick workouts over the Belmont track have got tongues wagging. Our top choice for the win is outside horse, Doctor Voodoo, shortening from an impressive gate to wire win at a mile "off the turf" over highly touted Fusaichi Pegasus progeny, Killenaule. This Petionville colt has also shown the ability to come from off the pace, as exhibited in his maiden win out of the 11 post here in early July. K.R.'s Regent went wide in his last when facing Doctor Voodoo at a mile but has some closing ability. SELECTIONS #7. Doctor Voodoo WIN 3.80 3.00 2.40 #1. Monster Chaser #6. Fierro's Choice Doctor Voodoo (4-5) served notice that he is a juvenile runner to be reckoned with after stalking frontrunner, Who's the Cowboy (11-1), taking over on the turn, and cruising home to an easy stakes victory in 1:10.95. Who's the Cowboy saved place, beaten by 7 lengths. We Love Rocky (6-1) ran evenly for the show prize. The exacta paid $29.00 and the trifecta returned, surprisingly, $154.60. Congratulations! September 19, 2004. A strong Michael Gill/Gamaliel Vasquez entry will be a controlling influence on the early pace in this race featuring veteran Mid-Atlantic claimers with claiming prices ranging from $22k to $18k. Steady Sleetwood Mac, a 7 year old gelding, ships in from Timonium and lengthens out from 4 furlongs and Vasquez drops him from allowance company in search of a fourth straight victory. He will likely tire out Alsalsa, who fits with this group but rarely puts two strong performances together and enters this out of a win here 2 weeks ago. The pace scenario sets up perfectly for Sleetwood Mac's stablemate, Cool Luke, to press the leaders from the outside. The 6 year old hasn't won a race for a few seasons, but delivered a strong performance in the slop at Saratoga last month, beating Stong by a half length after a front running trip. Devil's Con was beating claimers regularly at Delaware Park last season, but hasn't had the same success against allowance competition. The drop in class puts him right on target to hit the board. Glamdring starts for the Bruce Levine barn first off the claim out of a tough race in which he was beaten by a very game Brooke's Trick in August. Ignore the rise in class, as this one will be tough in the stretch. Stewart Elliot replaces Eibar Coa aboard Second Collection who is best used underneath in the gimmicks. The 5 year old rarely comes up with something extra in the stretch, but fits with these in terms of class. Closer Justnowayofknowin' will have to step up to catch these. R B's Boy ships in from Philadelphia after some success this summer against fellow Pennsylvania breds in restricted stakes there and at Penn National. In his Monmouth debut he will have to deal with the change in surface from the late favoring Philly track to the speed crazy oval on the shore. We'll be watching closely. SELECTIONS #1a. Cool Luke SHOW 3.00 #5. Glamdring PLACE 2.60 2.40 #4. Devil's Con WIN 8.00 4.00 2.80 TRIFECTA 67.80 Devil's Con (3-1) was rated well off the pace on the inside early, then was brought out with a furlong to go to easily sweep past our top choice, Cool Luke (3-1) and fading front-runner, Alsalsa (24-1), getting the win in 1:10.30. Four lengths back was the betting favorite, Glamdring (1-1), followed the winner into the stretch but was no match. The exacta paid $24.00 and the trifecta, with all our choices in, returned $67.80. Congratulations! September 18, 2004. Some 3 year olds who fell off the Triple Crown wagon meet a few up-and-comers in this year's running of the $150k Grade 2 Jerome Handicap, a race won in the recent past by such notables as Fusaichi Pegasus, Boston Common and Richter Scale. It's questionable as to whether there is a gold nugget such as those buried in this field, but there is some big talent. Saratoga County, a winner at a mile at Aqueduct in the spring in the Grade 3 Gotham, will likely be on the lead, under new jockey Cornelio Velasquez. Ever since drawing the 14 post in the Lexington at Keeneland in April, this Valid Expectations colt has been shy out of the gate. His current form doesn't point to much success lengthening out of three straight 7 panel losses. Hot jockey, Javier Castellano, jumps ship. Bob Baffert-trained Forestry progeny, Teton Forest, will take a lot of action subsequent to his remarkable second place finish to Fire Slam in the Grade 2 Riva Ridge BC here in June. The layoff is the only negative, but, still, his workouts have looked strong. Jerry Bailey is replaced by Sean Bridgmohan in the irons. Our choice to win today is outside horse, Ice Wynnd Fire, coming out of a fine closing performance in the very competitive Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga. Edgar Prado joins forces with trainer Bobby Frankel aboard a colt who could be on the verge of joining the elite of his age group. Sir Oscar was having his way with Florida bred stakes rivals as a juvenile at Calder Race Course, but was stopped in his tracks when he was entered in the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby. Those two contests seemed to have taken the spirit out of this one, and trainer changes and drops in class haven't helped matters in the least way. For a potential bomb on the board, we like Mahzouz, who twice gobbled up ground in the Belmont stretch after shipping here from Kentucky. A former Nick Zito trainee, Laurie LaFavers now trains the colt for Buckram Oak Farm. Pablo Fragoso gets a leg up. Our favorite New York bred, West Virginia, tries to make the considerable step up to facing open handicap company. This race doesn't match up well for his in terms of pace. A second Frankel horse in this field is inside starter, Coded Warning, a Cryptoclearance colt who's been in the money in virtually every start and draws Castellano today. SELECTIONS #7. Ice Wynnd Fire 5-2 PLACE 2.70 2.40 #1. Coded Warning 5-1 #6. Teton Forest 6-5 WIN 6.60 3.10 2.70 #5. Mahzouz 12-1 SHOW 4.60 Teton Forest (2-1) proved today in the mud that his performance in the Riva Ridge was no fluke, by wiring today's contest, pulling away in the stretch to win by 6 lengths after setting a moderate pace. Our top choice, Ice Wynnd Fire (6-5), chased the pace and stayed on in the stretch to get the place prize, just 3/4 length ahead of our longshot pick, Mahzouz (23-1), who closed well to add some value to the trifecta, which returned $100.50. Seaside Salute 10-1 SHOW 4.70 September 17, 2004. This entry level allowance race has drawn together a 7 horse field, 3 of whom are trying to make the jump from the claiming rank. One of those is You and I filly, American Challenge, trained by Tim Hills, making her third start off the bench. This 4 year old filly has yet to fulfill the potential she displayed in her maiden win at Churchill Downs over a year ago and the lack of front speed could see her setting the pace, a position she is clearly uncomfortable with. Dangerously was lengthening out in her first try against winners and stayed close enough for us to warrant a little extra attention to the Formal Dinner filly. If nothing else, Morning Sky is versatile as she has moved from dirt to turf and from sprints to routes with a chance to win in every start. But, this Mt. Livermore offspring hasn't shown sprinting speed since last summer. Notorious owner, Michael Gill, doled out $25k to reclaim Notimetoquit out of a win a month ago. Today, jockey Horacio Karamanos should have this well-travelled sophomore tucked in behind the leaders, ready to make her move in the stretch. Stacy's Favorite needs a return to her form of last summer, when she was learning the ropes on the lawn, to have any chance today. Salt Flat, a daughter of Salt Lake, has a great late kick but might find today's competition a little too tough. Outside horse, Gypsy Limits, is our choice to be pressing Notimetoquit in the stretch. Jockey Alfredo Clemente has perfectly timed a couple of big late runs to produce two wins at this distance. SELECTIONS #5. Notimetoquit 5-2 SHOW 2.40 #7. Gipsy Limits 9-2 #3. Dangerously 7-2 WIN 4.80 3.00 2.60 #6. Salt Lake 6-1 American Challenge (6-1), on the inside, and bettors' favorite, Dangerously (7-5), dueled through solid fractions and were engaged by our top choice, Notimetoquit (9-5), after a half mile. The three finished the race in the order that they hit the top of the stretch, with Dangerously getting the win by a half length over Dangerously in 1:11.62. Notimetoquit had to settle for third. The exacta paid $32.40 and the trifecta returned $58.60. September 16, 2004. There is early speed on the inside and out in this field of 8 New Jersey breds trying to break the second level allowance condition at 6 furlongs. Starting from the inside post, 3 year old Dancin Dusty, a Tim Kelly trainee, will be the horse to catch on the rail. The sophomore suddenly matured this summer and has won two of his last three races, going gate to wire both times. Today, he attracts excellent jockey Joe Bravo and we see no reason he won't still be dancing late in the stretch. Alsalsa moves back up to allowance company after dropping down for a win over $16k open claiming foes. The 4 year old gelding barely lasted in that victory and the outside post position will cost him valuable real estate in the early going today. We prefer him inside. Tucking in behind those two will be lightly raced 3 year old, Kell, making his third start off the bench after sitting out for 8 months. His comeback in July resulted in an improbable win at 7-1 and then he caught a murderous pace here last month at this allowance level. Once again, Julian Pimentel gets the call from trainer Richard Dutrow and we like this crew to wind up in the winner's circle today. Six year old, Quick Print, ships over from Philadelphia after failing repeatedly against open allowance company. Trainer Diane Jeannont has tried this move before with limited success. In his fourth try this year at breaking this condition, Grrrgarious, might be well backed. He seems to have the speed and class to beat these but has developed a pattern of running evenly with no punch in the stretch. Trying for two wins in a row is 4 year old gelding, Mug of Love, who will be a runner we must include in all gimmicks. The son of Not For Love has overcome tough post positions in both his Monmouth starts this summer and Edwin King Jr stays aboard. Jimmy Easter won this season at 15-1 when the pace collapsed in front of him. Most of the time, he arrives much too late. If you want to try catching lightning in a bottle, here's your play. But, it's not for us. N.J. Norquestor makes his second start for trainer Ben Perkins Jr after a troubled trip here two weeks ago. When he's going good, the gelded son of Norquestor is tough in the drive. We're willing to overlook that last outing and suggest that his wide winning bid in August is a truer indicator of his current form. Perkins goes to jockey Rajiv Maragh for the 7lb apprentice allowance. SELECTIONS #6. Kell 5-2 #1. Dancin Dusty 3-1 WIN 14.20 5.60 3.60 #7. N.J. Norquestor 10-1 PLACE 6.20 5.00 #5. Mug of Love 7-2 With the scratch of Alsalsa, only 2 speed horses, Dancin Dusty (6-1) and Kell (1-1), were left to duel early through quick fractions of 22.67 and 46.01. The inside horse, Dancin Dusty, proved to be the fitter of the two, as he pulled away coming out of the turn and accelerated home, winning by 4 lengths over closer N.J. Norquestor (6-1), in a time of 1:10.69. Jimmy Easter (6-1) held on for third, outlasting a tiring Kell. The exacta paid $150.80 and the trifecta, with the top two choices out, returned $636.20. Congratulations! September 15, 2004. A field of 6 sophomore fillies takes on one 4 year old non-winner of 3 races in today's opener at Monmouth Park. Most of the early pace players are starting from the outside posts. High-percentage trainer, Richard Dutrow, has shipped Pam's Ruckus down from Saratoga after she failed to make much of an impression against 3 year old $20k claimers. This will be only her second try at two turns and only the second route of her career. She looked impressive breaking her maiden off the bench in her first outing for this operation at Belmont over 7 furlongs in June, but likely won't have a 5 length lead at the top of the stretch today. Get Crackin, out of the Peter Walder stable, beat $16k claimers in her New Jersey debut, then failed to fire in the stretch at this level last month. The Florida-bred, with Chris DeCarlo getting the call, could potentially get caught in a pace duel early. The lone 4 year old, Unrepentant, might get a lot of betting support due to her win at this level 2 months ago. She makes her first start for Patricia Farro, who claimed her 9 days ago for $12.5k. Alan Garcia is in the irons and Farro has had success with starters first off the claim. Getting first crack at the tiring front-runners will be inside horse, Impulsive Gal, who successfully moved from turf to dirt, picking up the win against a bunch similar to these. Charlotte Bay hasn't yet shown the late speed necessary to win at this level. The Captain Bodgit filly has improved since lengthening to routes, but we would demand a very good price. A winner at a mile in Florida, I've Got to Win, out of the Edwin Broome barn, stalked very quick fractions in a sprint here 12 days ago for a very impressive win at 6-1 odds. Today's race will be her third off the bench and third for her owner/trainer. Alfredo Clemente keeps the mount and should have her in good position for a strong closing effort. Claimed out of her two last starts, Adele Lucille gets a rematch with Impulsive Gal after getting caught by that one in the stretch, squandering a 3 length lead. Today she attracts leading jockey, Joe Bravo, who should be able to work out a proper stalking trip for the underachieving filly who was purchased at auction for $165k two years ago. SELECTIONS #2. I've Got to Win 5-1 WIN 10.80 6.80 5.00 #3. Adele Lucille 5-2 #1. Impulsive Gal 9-2 #5. Get Crackin 7-2 Our top choice, I've Got to Win (4-1), showed sharpness breaking quickly out of the gate and durability, as she stuck with the pace in a long duel with a determined Charlotte Bay (11-1) to win as the third choice at the windows in 1:44.71, a half length ahead of her game rival. This race marked the second win in a row for I've Got to Win and the fourth victory in 7 starts in her career. The 4 year old, Unrepentant (9-1) was up late for third. The exacta paid $82.40 and the trifecta returned $388.60. Congratulations! September 12, 2004. A field of 8 four year old fillies and a couple of 5 year old mares knock heads in what will be a reasonably even matchup of successful allowance racers. Silver Ghost filly, It's Spooky, has drawn the outside post and will have to clear quite a few quick runners to get the lead. She did well at 7 panels here in the spring in the mud, stalking the pace and taking the lead at 3/4 of a mile in less than 1:10. She tired trying two turns and looked very rusty in an optional claimer a month ago. There are a lot of negative signals where she's concerned. Our choice for the win today is Argentine import, Brunilda (Arg), who makes her second North American start after winning her debut at 7 1/2 furlongs on the dirt 3 weeks ago. Trained by Michael Stidham, who's holding a hot hand at this meet, the Mutakddim fillywon twice at this distance on the turf in South America and just missed a Grade 2 stakes win in January. By virtue of her inside post position, Rich City Girl will likely end up on the lead. Well-bred (Carson City - Great Lady Slew, Seattle Slew) for the distance, her front-running style hasn't served her well as the competition has got tougher in her career. Mymich broke through the N3x allowance condition here in July then was shipped to Saratoga for a restricted stakes race. She was demolished in New York but could still draw a lot of attention at the windows today. We see her as a dangerous underlay bet. One Fine Shweetie has cashed a lot of cheques this year in Iowa. The competition today might be a shade tougher than she's faced and this will be only her third career start on the grass. Princess Pelona would have beat this bunch handily six months ago, but her form going into today is mighty suspect. Beautiful Bets picked up 12 lengths on the leaders in her first turf race in over a year a couple of weeks ago. If the Frank Kirby trainee can stay in closer contact with the pack, she can get at least a small share at a nice price. Former Todd Pletcher trainee, Proud Beauty (Ire), now under the guidance of Eddie Kenneally, makes her Arlington debut with Rene Douglas in the irons. The Irish-bred daughter of Danehill is the most experienced turf runner in the field and will be the main contender late. We like her to hit the board. Five year old, Golden Trevally, has been stalled at the N3x condition since the spring but always has something in the tank for the stretch drive and, while she's not necessarily a strong win candidate, she's an excellent horse to play underneath. Samantha B. has had success at this meet and picks up James Graham to replace Rafael Bejarano (who is riding at Turfway Park) but the pace scenario doesn't shape up well for this Dance Brightly filly who usually likes to be fairly close to the action. SELECTIONS #7. Brunilda (Arg) 4-1 SHOW 2.60 #9. Proud Beauty (Ire) 7-2 #6. Beautiful Bets 20-1 SHOW 3.60 #4. Golden Trevally 12-1 Rich City Girl (6-1) set a very moderate pace, allowing the field to bunch up and, consequently, there was a lot of traffic on the second turn. Eusebio Razo Jr. was able to angle Mymich (6-1) out of trouble and bring her home the winner, 3/4 of a length up on hard closing longshot, One Fine Shweetie (22-1). Our top choice, Brunilda (Arg)(2-1), ran into trouble in the drive and wound up in a dead heat for third with Beautiful Bets (10-1). The exacta paid $293.60 and the trifecta returned $1,102.20. September 11, 2004. We turn our attention once again to the ever deepening division of 3 year old fillies, who vie today for a $250k purse and, possibly, a berth in the Breeders Cup Distaff. Pulpit filly, Magical Illusion, skipped the Saratoga meet and resumes racing at the site of her 2 career wins. The James Bond trainee hooked up with some of the top girls in the Grade 1 Acorn, finishing behind Island Sand, Society Selection and Friendly Michelle (who went on to take the Grade 1 Prioress next out), straight out of her maiden victory. When she lengthened out to the Classic distance in the CCA Oaks, she tired late. But, after a rest, she should return fresh and, with Edgar Prado on board, ready to press the early leaders, then drive to the lead. Bending Strings has a Grade 2 victory to her credit but is best at sprinting. Today's distance might be too much to ask. Trainer Todd Pletcher snuck Capeside Lady from minor stakes for New York breds to Monmouth Park for some action against open company. He returned with a win in the Grade 2 Monmouth Breeders Cup Oaks but we have to shy away from strict front runners trying much tougher horses such as these. The most accomplished filly in the field, and the likely favorite, Stellar Jayne, beat Ashado this year in the Mother Goose, a feat worthy of loud proclamation. Robby Albarado should have no problem tucking in behind the pacesetters and will likely be looking for space along the rail on the final turn. He Loves Me, a winner of 5 races this season, gets a nice pace setup for her late closing kick. But, a win here will prove to be much tougher than her victory in the Iowa Oaks. Ogden Mills Phipps' regally bred Daydreaming takes another kick at the graded stakes can and has drawn a much easier group than she faced in losses in the Mother Goose, the Comely at Aqueduct and last year's Spinaway and Frizette. The inside post is a drawback but she gets top New York jockey, John Velasquez, in the irons to replaced injured Jerry Bailey. My Lordship rattled off 4 straight wins at Woodbine to start her career and now ships south under the tutelage of Bill Mott, trying a new distance, one she should not have a problem with. Mambo Bell looks to be outclassed today. Shadow Cast, a Grade 2 winner at the Fair Grounds in February, returned from the bench with a couple of strong efforts at Saratoga, picks up jockey Richard Migliore and will be heard from late. We suspect she could be the big price in the gimmicks. SELECTIONS #8. Magical Illusion 4-1 SCRATCHED #2. Stellar Jayne 2-1 WIN 3.00 2.30 2.10 #4. Shadow Cast 15-1 #3. Capeside Lady 5-1 SCRATCHED Our top choice, Magical Illusion, was scratched along with fellow frontrunner, Capeside Lady, leaving heavy favorite, Stellar Jayne (1-2) with only Bending Strings (7-1) to contend with early. Daydreaming (5-1) raced inside and challenged the leader after she set very relaxed fractions of 24.11 & 48.11. Stellar Jayne responded to the pressure and pulled away in the stretch, completing the final 1/2 furlong in 11.72 seconds for the win by a length in a rather leisurely 1:48.25. He Loves Me (7-1) nosed out Shadow Cast (22-1) for show. The exacta paid $10.20 and the trifecta returned $26.80. September 10, 2004. The opening race on the opening day of the fall meet at Belmont Park features a field of 8 veterans, many of whom have already raced over 40 times in their career. Trainer Dominic Schettino, who had a very successful Saratoga meeting, tries to find an appropriate claiming level for inside horse, Jimmy O, who had been knocking heads with the likes of Ghostzapper and Clock Stopper last year as a 3 year old. The gelded son of Stormy Atlantic finished 3rd in theGrade 2 La Berrara last spring at Hollywood, but hasn't produced much to bank on this year. He drops to his lowest price, meeting as weak a field as there is available on the "A" circuit and, still, we're hesitant to put him on top. We've been watching Love Less since his remarkable finish in the $80k Hollie Hughes at Aqueduct in February. Two claims and a steady decline on his price tag brings him here today with a shot at the win. We'll prefer him underneath. Afortunado has only ever beaten maidens and is in tough here if the whole field goes. Our choice for the win is 7 year old gelding, Cozy Man, who enters fresh off the bench after a win here 7 weeks against better, including Stong. Richard Migliore picks up the mount and should have the first run at the leaders after a clean stalking trip. The older half of a Robert Barbara entry, Classy E.T. has been a bust since Barbara claimed him back from the Levine stable in late March. His form looks to be way off. Another horse who seems to be out of sorts is Orka, claimed by Richard Dutrow for $45k at the peak of his career this past winter. Dutrow won a few, but the writing was on the wall as the 5 year old was let go for a mere $14k by July. He has been nothing short of a major disappointment for his current connections. Brightest Ice likes to be in the lead, but 6 furlongs doesn't appear to be his distance. The wild card in this field is Risky Cat, entered here out of a 5 furlong dash on the grass at Philadelphia which has already produced a couple of "next out" winners. Once a highly touted sophomore, if there is a price we would use him on the gimmicks. SELECTIONS #6. Cozy Man 6-5 WIN 3.20 2.60 2.10 #3. Love Less 9-2 #7. Orka 7-2 SHOW 2.60 #5. Risky Cat 8-1 Jose Espinoza hustled Afortunado (27-1) to the front and they set reasonably quick fractions along the inside of 22.73 & 45.67, all the while pressed by our top choice and bettors' favorite, Cozy Man (3-5), who had to get serious in the stretch to beat the longshot by a half length in a time of 1:10.14. Orka (5-1) ran evenly and got the show by a nose. The exacta paid $48.80 and the trifecta returned $133.00. September 9, 2004. A field of 7 fillies, all of whom are most comfortable near the front of the pack, will be contending early for position in this claiming race. Philadelphia-based trainer, Alfredo Velasquez, ships over his own Mister Jolie filly, Annika Lass, who he picked up at auction last year for $11k. She didn't race as a juvenile, then won her debut at Philly Park, going off at 17-1. Her first try against winners was a dud but she did draw into a small field of decent sophomores that day at Aqueduct. Out since February, we'll just be watching today. Standswithafist will be well bet after finishing second to Bella Bourie here a month ago. The Gold Case filly, winner of the $60k Colleen stakes last season, has lacked the necessary speed in the late going to compete consistently with these. We'll leave her on the bottom of exotics tickets but would be wary to key her on top. Shipping in from Suffolk Downs and shortening from a flat mile, Open Your Eyes, now trained by Tim Hills, will contest the pace and should be discouraged by the stretch. Outside starter, Wild Catseye, a blue blood daughter of Forest Wildcat trained by Ben Perkins, drops in from the N2x allowance level. Winner of the NJ Futurity at the Meadowlands as a juvenile, this filly can win with her best and has the back class and pedigree to dominate a group like this. Her form, however, is suspect and that lack of competitive edge could be the difference today. Our choice is Bella Bourie, a filly stabilized by being switched to the capable hands of top trainer, Peter Walder, after being moved from sprints to routes back to sprints to the turf for a route back to the dirt for a sprint over the spring months. Also, the win here last month shouldn't be shocking as it is a throwback to her performance in early February over the Aqueduct inner dirt, when she beat the likes of Baymont by double-digits. Jockey Chuck Lopez is back in the saddle. Lightly raced Miracle Runner ships in from Delaware off two straight victories and Stew Elliot picks up the mount as the French Deputy filly moves up in class. She has the type of closing style that could easily put her on the board. On the inside is Simply Jolie, back after two months on the sidelines. Another Mister Jolie filly, she looked like the real deal in New Orleans last fall and winter. A claim and a trip north to Massachusetts has dropped her from minor stakes races at Delta Downs to this position. We'll have to take a pass today. SELECTIONS #2. Bella Bourie 5-2 SHOW 2.10 #7. Wild Catseye 9-2 SCRATCHED #5. Standswithafist 7-2 PLACE 3.80 2.10 #6. Miracle Runner 5-1 WIN 12.00 5.00 2.20 Scratches to Annika Lass and Wild Catseye left Standswithafist (5-2) virtually alone on the lead, setting decent fractions and stalked by Miracle Runner, who had a clear trip under Stew Elliot and pulled away in the stretch to win by a length and a half over the pacesetter in 1:10.37. It looked like a bounce for our top choice and betting favorite, Bella Bourie (4-5), who showed up for the show prize, beaten by over 9 lengths. The exacta paid $50.40. September 8, 2004. A mighty speed duel should occur early in this competitive entry level allowance contest. Well-bred underachiever, Curb, will likely emerge as the betting favorite as the 4 year old gelded son of Indian Charlie takes his sixth crack at this condition since breaking his maiden here over a year ago. Out of the Scott Lake stable, this is the one horse that needs the lead to win and is going to be hard used getting it. We don't tend to like horses shortening into a highly contentious pace scenario such as this. He'll have to get by Threewitt, another 4 year old gelding who was having a fine winter in Florida, moving out of the conditioned claiming ranks to win a couple of starters allowances. Things went sour in March and a trip north to Charles Town in the spring didn't help matters. Trainer John Zimmerman has taken over the conditioning and Clinton Potts is in the irons as this Formal Dinner progeny makes his first start in 10 weeks. Regal Watch moves up in class after winning six straight claiming races at this meet. While the opposition may be better today, we can't ignore the fact that he has gradually taken 2 seconds off his time at the distance since May and it's hard to dismiss any horse with a record of 8 wins in 16 starts. Leading jockey at the meet and second in the country, Ramon Dominguez, is back in the saddle. Another moving up from the claimers is late bloomer, Ah Boo, who was claimed by Allen Iwinski for $32k out of his maiden win at Gulfstream Park in March. The Favorite Trick colt has gradually improved his speed after a couple of allowance tries at Monmouth and a trip back to the claiming ranks which culminated with a win over non-winners of two over a wet track here last month. Norberto Arroyo replaces Dominguez for the ride. We expect him to be near the front for the stretch drive. Another Lake trainee, Stonewood, has a tendency to run evenly and will find the adjustment in competition to be difficult. Inside horse, sophomore Five Steps, could get the perfect trip from Abel Castellano Jr, tucked in along the rail. Making only his fourth career start, we can still expect some dramatic improvement and he has shown great determination in all his races thus far. Outside horse, Shakran (GB), had to be dropped all the way to the bottom of the claiming ladder to finally beat $5k non-winners of two. And, it took him two cracks at them. We don't have a lot of confidence in this one on the rise. SELECTIONS #6. Ah Boo 4-1 WIN 8.40 4.60 3.00 #3. Regal Watch 3-1 #1. Five Steps 6-1 PLACE 4.40 3.60 #2. Stonewood 8-1 SHOW 4.20 Our predicted pace duel ensued, virtually eliminating all three early running contestants, while our top choice, Ah Boo (3-1), was wisely placed just off the pace and moved 4-wide to the top of the stretch with plenty left to win in 1:10.28, 3 lengths up on a closing Five Steps (3-1). Stonewood (12-1) passed the tiring frontrunners to grab the show prize and provide some value to the trifecta, which paid a hefty $213.00. The exacta returned $39.00. Congratulations! September 6, 2004. 10th Arlington Park. The Safely Kept stakes. A field lacking much true early speed leaves Summer Mis, starting from the inside post, as a strong candidate to settle into a comfortable pace, then pull away in the stretch for the win as the 5 year old returns to her home track after ambitiously taking on Grade 2 competitors in the Honorable Miss at Saratoga last month. This is the type of field she can easily handle and she has 7 wins in 11 tries at Arlington. Godolphin-owned Maple Syrple tries older fillies and mares for the first time after a disappointing return to North America in the Smart Deb stakes for the Ontario-bred American Chance filly. She'll try to return to the form that saw her finish second to Ashado in the Grade 2 Schuylerville as a juvenile. Also in the mix early will be Cashmere Miss, who has done her best running over this oval, but hasn't been able to make the jump from allowance to stakes races. In June, Smoke Chaser, stayed close to My Trusty Cat, winner of the Grade 3 Chicago BCH and the Grade 2 Honorable Miss. At her best, she's right there at the wire. Today, the only negative is her outside starting position. Questionable Past has won every one of her sprints on the dirt. She dominated Texas sophomores before a second place finish at a flat mile in the $250k Delta Downs Princess stakes ended her 4 race winning streak. A win here in the Smart Deb dispelled any thoughts that she doesn't belong with these. We would have to be crazy to leave Souris off any exotics tickets. This 4 year old Defrere filly has missed the board only 4 times in 22 starts. With Steven Asmussen serving his 15 day suspension, his top assistant, Toby Sheets is the trainer of record today. The lack of a serious speed duel will hamper talented Sue's Good News from being able to show off her great closing kick. Take note of this 4 year old's trip today. SELECTIONS 1-4-7-6 FINISH 4-7-1-6 Jockey Eusebio Razo Jr rushed our top choice and the public's pick, Summer Mis (8-5), to the front after stumbling out of the gate. They set a brisk pace in 21.91 & 45.11, hitting the top of the stretch with the race well in hand having put away the other early challengers. But, Souris (7-1, our must-play on the gimmicks, came flying through the stretch to split the leaders and win in 1:10.25, a length up on Smoke Chaser (5-2). It was another length back to Summer Mis. The exacta paid $72.40 and the trifecta returned $182.00. Congratulations! Philadelphia Park Monday, September 6, 2004. Race 1 - 1 1/16 miles - Claiming $5k N2L - 3yr olds and upward #7. The second division of this year's Glens Falls features multiple stakes winner, Film Maker, in her return to Saratoga as a 4 year old after winning the Grade 3 Lake George last season at 9-1, putting herself on the map as an up and coming sophomore filly who went on to take the Grade 1 QEII Cup at Keeneland. She'll have to dispose of Arvada (GB), an accomplished 4 year old who is trying to make the jump from the non-winners of one allowance condition. The distance is not a problem and it's wise not to ignore horses who close well and know how to win. Harry Vega is along for the ride. Inside horse, Primetimevalentine, hasn't looked as sharp as she did last year when she finished second at 8-1 in the Glens Falls Handicap. Jose Santos, back from injury, is still looking fo
