October 19, 2005.
By far, the classiest dame in the 5th at Keeneland is Plaid, a 4 year old filly trained by Dallas Stewart who has been racing against much better than this for most of her career. Her monstrous win at Turfway Park in February will make her a deserving favorite despite some troubled trips in an injury shortened 2005 season. Leading Keeneland rider, Rafael Bejarano, gets the call. Keeping her honest in the early going will be sophomore sprinter, Faithful Flyer, who stretches out to two turns for just the second time in her career, spent mostly at Thistledown. Racing first off the claim by Randy Matthews, the Formal Dinner filly takes a big move forward form $12.5k claimers at Turfway. Stormy Atlantic filly, Majestic Storm, broke her maiden at this distance at Oaklawn Park in the spring before a summer campaign in which trainer Joe Cain tried to convert her into a turf miler. Primarily a turf specialist, Peace Pledge gets moved back to the dirt track after a disappointing Monmouth Park meet. The 5 year old mare will not likely provide much value at the windows. Ballistic Babe, a 6 year old mare shipping from Turfway, would need a career best performance to make an impact today after repeatedly failing against conditioned claiming competition over the summer. Silver Deputy filly, Miss Helen Wheels, seems on the verge of a breakthrough race after an impressive maiden breaker at River Downs in August. There may be too much speed here for her to be able to relax on the rail. Dropping in for a tag, Struttin' had a habit of hitting the board as a 4 year old, earning over $51k as an allowance competitor at Oaklawn and Churchill Downs. As a 3 year old, Okaya, showed strength as a router but was converted to a sprinter in 2005 with mixed results. Racing third off the bench, the outside starter should offer value and will be a major player if she can reach back to her spring racing form.
